Day 14 – September 20, 2026 – Matthew 14

John Ortberg wrote a book entitled If you want to walk on water you have to get out of the boat. I highly recommend it. It describes the tendency of churches and individuals who have been doing this for a long time to inevitably steer toward the more risk averse stance as possible in their life. He says that those who have been in mainline churches for a long time have forgotten what it looks like to get out of the boat so that you can walk on water. It is a good read and one that I would highly recommend especially for those who have been in the traditional church for a long time. I would love to see a church full of people who are looking to walk on water and are eager to get out of the boat.

Peter’s beginning to sink comes about as a result of the waves and the storms that are literally battering him. But isn’t it ironic that this is exactly when we need to keep our eyes on Jesus and stay focused on him in our lives, and yet there was Peter forgetting the most fundamental thing possible, it was Jesus who called us out upon the water.
