Our
Child
Safety
Policy
Recognizing
that
our
children
are
a
special
gift
from
God
requiring
the
best
care
we
can
provide,
our
church
has
adopted
a
Child
Safety
Policy
outlining
the
procedures
governing
all
programs
involving
children
and
youth
in
the
church.
A
complete
copy
of
the
Policy
is
available
in
each
church
classroom
or
from
the
church
office.
Some
of
the
key
pieces
of
the
policy
are
as
follows:
All
adults
working
with
children
and
youth
must
be
familiar
with
the
Child
Safety
Policy
and
must
have
completed
 State
Police
and
Child
Abuse
checks.
At
least
two
eligible
adults
must
supervise
children/youth
in
all
classes/activities.
A
procedure
is
in
place
for
the
reporting
of
any
suspected
violation
of
the
Child
Safety
Policy.
Please
see
the
Pastors
or
Director
of
Christian
Education
with
any
questions
regarding
the
Policy
or
for
direction
on
completing
the
steps
required
in
order
to
work
with
our
children
and
youth.

Confirmation
Making
disciples
of
Jesus
Christ
is
what
confirmation/commissioning
is
meant
to
be.
When
youth
join
the
church
at
the
end
of
the
process,
they
are
making
a
commitment
to
live
as
a
disciple
of
Jesus
Christ
within
the
body
of
Christ
here
at
First
Presbyterian.
Youth
who
feel
they
are
ready to
prepare
for
their
confirmation
take
a
yearlong
journey
with
our
pastors,
mentors,
and
their
fellow
confirmands.
They
participate
in
class
activities
and
individual
meetings
and
activities
with
their
mentors
to
discern
Christ’s
desires
for
them.
Youth
(9th
grade
or
older)
participate
in
confirmation
when
they
sense
God’s
calling
them
to
a
deeper
faith
commitment.

Summer
Camps
We
believe
that
a
week
at
Camp
Donegal can
have
a
powerful
influence
on
the
spiritual
lives
of
our
children
that
can
last
a
lifetime.
We
encourage
our
children
to
spend
a
week
at
camp
each
summer.
We
also
encourage
our
children
to
go
together
with
other
children
from
our
church
so
they
can
build
Christian
friendships
that
will help
them
to
value
their
faith
community
at
home.
First
Presbyterian
will
pay
half
the
cost
for
a
child
to
go
to
Camp
Donegal. If
the
financial
needs
are
greater
for
any
child,
the
church
will
pay
the
entire
cost
so
that
no
child
will
miss
out
on
this
opportunity
to
go
to
camp.
There
are
a
variety
of
camps
available
throughout
the
summer,
and
there
is
sure
to
be
a
camp
for
everyone.
Camps
are available
for
kindergarten
age
through
senior
high.

Acolyte
Training
Children
in second
grade or older
are
trained as
worship leaders
by serving
as acolytes
during Sunday
services.
Acolyte training
takes
place in early
fall. Training
is done by
Pastor Jennie
during the
'worship skills'
portion of
our mid-week
LOGOS children's
fellowship
on one Wednesday
in October.
Children learn
that Jesus
Christ is
the "light
of the world" (John
8:12). They
learn that
the light
they carry
in and
from the sanctuary
reminds the
worshipers
of Christ's
presence with
us. The children
are given
instruction
and opportunity
to practice
lighting the
candles at
the front
of the Sanctuary.
Following
their
training the
new acolytes
are contacted
to schedule
when they
will serve
during
the year. |

Special
Events
Children’s
Day
Each
May, the
children and
youth
Sunday School
programs
invite the
whole
church to
Fellowship
Hall for
Sunday School
hour
for a special
celebration
called “Children’s
Day.” This
event offers
the whole
church the
opportunity
to discover
what our
children and
youth
have been
learning
throughout
the year
in Sunday
School
as each class
provides
a class presentation
such as a
song, skit,
or description
of its class.
Bible
Presentation
for 2nd Graders
Each
fall, the
church presents
each of
our second
graders
with their
own Bible
with the
encouragement
to study
God’s
word throughout
their lives.
During
worship,
each child
is presented
a Bible
by a special
person
in
their lives
selected
by the
child. The
children
begin using
their own
Bible by
sharing
a
treasured
Bible verse
with the
congregation.
Family
Advent Night
The
first Sunday
of Advent
is a special
time for
our church
family to
gather in
preparation
for the arrival
of Jesus.
On this evening,
the church
family comes
together
for fellowship,
worship,
and activities
to mark the
beginning
of this special
season.
Youth
Sunday
Each
winter brings
an exciting
Sunday where
the Senior
High youth
lead our
congregation
in worship.
For this
special
service,
the students
plan and
lead the
morning’s
worship
at 8:00
and
10:45 AM.
This is
an uplifting
service
that
glorifies
God and
blesses
the body
of Christ
at First
Presbyterian.
Promotion
Sunday
Each
September,
all of our
Sunday School
classes gather
in Fellowship
Hall to celebrate
the promotion
of children
into the
next class
and to mark
the beginning
of an exciting
new Sunday
School year.
Often, special
projects
or presentations
for the year
are also
unveiled.
